Sugarcraft Sculptures

Show cake photos 2004 (46)

News Paper Extract about the sculpture.

"A Droitwich women has tasted success after creating Britain's biggest sugar craft sculpture

Cassie Brown of Oakleigh Road, has spent more than 500 hours and around £200 building an ornamental garden fountain, completer with water, ornamental dolphins and plinth.

The masterpiece is 6ft 6in tall and 4ft wide ans is to be showcased at the creative world of sugar show at Stoneleigh Park in Coventry this Saturday.

But although it is known to be a record breaker, the sculpture will not go down in history.

“We have contracted he Guinness Book of Records, but there is not a section for sugar craft sculptures” said Cassie, who has been doing sugar craft since the age of 13. “however, we have been in touch with the British Sugar craft Guild and have been told it is the biggest sugar craft piece ever in the UK and is what matters” Cassie was asked to come up with the idea for the sculpture for this weekend’sshow and was inspired while walking around her local garden centre.

“It made me wonder how i could do a garden fountain with edible water, as water and sugar do not mix” she added.

“it was eventually decided that we could use, fox’s glacier mints for the water, we melted them down on a low temperature in the microwave and poured the mints into a Teflon mould before putting this in the fridge.

That way, we didn’t burn the mints, but we could arrange them in any way we wanted.

“The rest of the sculpture was made with sugar paste and texturing and used airbrushing to colour it”

Cassie says “we” as halfway through the project she found out she was pregnant and has to enlist the help of other experts.

These Included Clegg Lyster, a fellow member of the Wychavon branch of the British Sugarcraft Guild.

The project took six months to design and get approved by a national committee for the show and a further 12 months to create” added Cassie it has been a lot of hard work but we are all delighted with the end result."
